It was built in 1942 as one of several ammunition storage facilities located far enough inland to be safe from Japanese attack. The site also met the requirement that the depot be in a dry and isolated area. ==Mission== Core customers include the Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, the United States Army Medical Materiel Agency, the Soldier Biological Chemical Command, the U.S. Army Field Support Command, and the Operations Support Command. During the 1970s and 1980s, SIAD was also used for the storage of unarmed nuclear weapons.
